ICU-Ghana’s Morgan Ayawine named Africa’s most respected labour CEO

The General Secretary of the Industrial and Commercial Workers’ Union (ICU-Ghana), Morgan Ayawine, has been recognised as Africa’s Most Respected CEO in Labour and Union Leadership at the 6th Africa’s Most Respected CEOs Conference and Awards held in Lusaka, Zambia.

Morgan Ayawine was honoured for his leadership, business excellence, innovation, commitment to ethical leadership, and outstanding contribution to organisational success and sustainable economic development across Africa.

The event brought together prominent business leaders, policymakers, entrepreneurs and other key stakeholders from across the continent to celebrate excellence in corporate governance, innovation, leadership and economic transformation.

In a remark after receiving the award, Morgan Ayawine dedicated the recognition to the hardworking leadership, management, staff, rank and file of ICU-Ghana.

He urged  government to take bold and decisive measures to revive once-vibrant industries, describing this as one of the most effective ways of addressing the growing employment challenges confronting young people in Ghana and across Africa.

Morgan Ayawine further pointed to the Union’s contribution to efforts aimed at sustaining and turning around key corporate institutions in Ghana.
“It is no secret that the success stories about turning around some corporate institutions, such as the National Investment Bank, Agricultural Development Bank and others, will not be complete without acknowledging the pivotal role ICU-Ghana played, together with progressive-minded corporate leaders and staff, as well as government, over the years to keep them in operation.”

He stressed that ICU-Ghana considers the interests and aspirations of employers to be closely connected to those of workers, arguing that the survival and growth of businesses are critical to sustained job creation and employment security, particularly for Ghana’s youth.

“The employers’ vision is the Union’s concern, because the survival of businesses is key to sustained job generation and employment security for our dear young compatriots.”

In this regard, Morgan Ayawine reaffirmed ICU-Ghana’s commitment to resisting unilateral decisions that could undermine strategic national enterprises and assets.

He cited the Volta Aluminium Company (VALCO), stressing that ICU-Ghana would not hesitate to oppose any unilateral attempt, particularly by government, to divest its interest in strategic national assets with significant growth potential.
